Interaction with society, particularly with the younger generations and the media, has become a priority for the IMM. Driven by both the necessity to communicate scientific achievements and a proactive attitude of IMM researchers towards non-scientific audiences, the decision to have dedicated collaborators to address Science and Society activities broadens now the scope of these events.

 

The media is the privileged means to communicate achievements of IMM researchers to the public. Active communication by means of press releases and direct contact with journalists ensures a constant presence of IMM news in the media.

 

Other activities, directed at more specific targets, such as the industry or potential future students are also carried out. As an example, guided tours and open days have been organized to either potential industrial partners or graduate students from Portuguese universities. Outreach activities have been developed in collaboration with Ciência Viva national agency and other partners. They include public exhibition events and summer training for youngsters at IMM laboratories. In addition, IMM researchers participate frequently in science events for the public.

 

These activities may correspond to isolated opportunities or be a result of previous involvement by a particular research unit in communicating science to the public.
