Flow Cytometry

The Flow Cytometry Unit provides a state of the art flow cytometry service to IMM researchers as well as external groups from other research institutes. Our Unit is used by nearly all the research units of the IMM. The main aims of the work performed here are to give training and support to researchers using flow cytometry. This includes instrument operation, data analysis and interpretation. UCF staff also provide a cell sorting service using the two High Speed Cell Sorters available (FACAriaI and FACSAriaIII). Staff members are also involved in research projects in collaboration with other Units at the IMM.

Services
The Flow Cytometry Unit is equipped with two high speed cell sorters, FACSAriaI and FACSAriaIII and three analysers. One FACSCalibur and two LSR Fortessa(all Becton Dickinson cytometers). We also have separate computers and software enabling researchers to analyse their flow cytometric data.
Cell sorting services require a dedicated operator (UCF Staff) and are available for use during normal Monday to Friday working hours. This service requires pre-booking by one of our staff and is available on the online booking system.
The cell analysers are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day for use by trained researchers upon booking online.
Our Unit also provides education, training, and advice for researchers wishing to use flow cytometry in their studies. It runs an annual flow cytometry seminar series targeted at new users that combines lectures on basic flow cytometry concepts and research applications with practical hands-on tutorials. Occasional seminars are also presented by Unit members or invited speakers on new techniques and instrumentation.

Prices
We charge according to the amount of time used on the instruments, which is logged by each user.
For more information regarding UCF please go to our wiki page.
The UCF Price Table for 2013.

How to use the service
All new users must get in touch with UCF staff in order to get proper training in using the flow cytometers and to be made aware of our rules. This applies to researchers with previous experience in flow cytometry.
Only after you have been trained by one of our staff members you will be granted access to the flow lab and to the online booking system.
FACSAria bookings and cancellations are made directly with one of the UCF by email immucf at fm.ul.pt
Since the FACSAria is very busy we have a waiting list system whereby we try to use up time that has been made available by cancelations.
